Horse Abuse Cases
We get a least 3 calls a week since we opened in March of 2013 from private citizens trying to report horse abuse cases and neglect or have horses removed from their current bad situations. Why do they call us? Because there are very few one stop resources available for public citizens.
As part of our mission statement we are also here to educate the public and be a resource. People don’t know who to contact, what they are legally able to do or how to report their complaints. Not every complaint is warranted but each area has someone who will look into it for you, but where do you find that information. Many places get so many calls a day on this stuff they are simply overwhelmed. We offer these callers a place to start and/or refer them to different sources of help.
We are not the only ones that get these calls. In the last month we have watched some new groups start to form with the intent of making large network resources, information, education and even finical assistance to the general public. We are joining up with some of these new groups that have the goal of becoming one massive resource for citizens in upstate NY.
These teams will network together with law enforcement, vets, rescues and any others that are willing to assist in giving the public a place to turn to. There is such a group in the works right here in the North Country. We have been working with them for a few weeks now to get this program up and running and will continue to work with them to assist the needs of the public.
There needs to be a place where horse owners, citizens with cruelty complaints and those in need of assistance to care for their animals can turn to. The idea is to help with prevention and we are very excited to see these new groups forming and become a part of such a much needed networking system.
As information and resources come together we will be sharing them here. We will also be attending conferences in the near future which will hopefully open up more resources to the general public.
